Romain (/roh-men) is a French freelance eyewear designer and craftsman, based in London and offering design solutions for eyewear brands as well as bespoke creations tailored to individuals.
Starting with a background in Optics in France, I’ve always been captivated by the art of handcrafted eyewear. Armed with a sheet of acetate, a saw, and a few YouTube tutorials, I embarked on creating my first frames. After 60 hours, my first frame was born, marking the starting point of my self-taught voyage into the realm of eyewear.
To deepen my knowledge, I earned a master's degree in Paris in Eyewear Design & Manufacturing and honed my skills at Belgium's prestigious Lunetier Ludovic for a year.
My next venture took me to London, where I joined Cubitts to play a main role in setting up and scaling their Bespoke workshop. I trained a talented team, turned the workshop into a vibrant hub of creativity, and produced pieces that earned acclaim on social media platforms.
Following that, I spent three years leading the design and product development of all the Cubitts collections. I reshaped the company's collection by establishing colour and collection strategy, sizing guidelines, upgraded overall product quality by setting new standards, and even liaised closely with manufacturers to ensure execution was flawless.
Alongside this, I ran the Bespoke+ services, designing and crafting custom frames for our special clients and celebrities like Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Val Garland, Sandy Powell or Misan Harriman. (see here)
I have now channelled my expertise into my own studio, Romain Kayo Studio where my services are bifurcated into two distinct categories.
On one hand, I offer specialised design and manufacturing support for eyewear brands, ranging from independent creators to large-scale licensing companies. This includes 2D and 3D design, manufacturing support, and strategic advice.
On the other hand, I provide bespoke eyewear and prototype creation services tailored for individuals, fashion brands, stylists, and the cinema industry.
